A Token of Our Esteem!

Ad announcing bonus token programFor many years, we have been trying to figure out how to reward our best and most loyal repeat customers. We finally figured out a way: tokens! Tokens of our esteem!

Well, you may say, big deal! What good is a little brass disk going to do me, even if it does look suspiciously like the Transit Gloria Mundi logo? That and $3.50 will get me a cup of latte at Starbucks.

But wait! That little brass disk and nine more just like it will get you a free TGM DVD ($19.95 retail price). 15 tokens will get you a free $29.95 DVD. 20 tokens will get you a free $39.95 DVD. And so on. See
below for a list of all our DVD prices in tokens, as well as the number of tokens awarded with each DVD.

Tokens will now come with every new DVD you order from TGM - you'll get one token for a $19.95 DVD, two for a $29.95 DVD, and three for a $39.95 DVD. (Those of you with a mathematical bent will notice that you get a bigger effective "discount" for the more expensive DVDs. This is, of course, intentional.)

It all works like frequent flyer miles. You can buy a DVD with money, or you can buy a DVD with tokens, but not a mixture of the two. So you'll need to save up tokens from several purchases, but once you have enough, the DVD is absolutely free (not even a shipping and handling charge) and you can purchase any DVD in our catalog with no restrictions. We even start you off with a freebie token (you need to be on our mailing list to get a free token - you can sign up by e-mail), just like most frequent flyer programs give you some free miles just for joining.

If you normally purchase TGM DVDs through a museum gift shop or other dealer, there are a couple of things you should know. Although tokens will be packaged with DVDs we sell through dealers, there are obviously a lot of DVDs out there on dealers' shelves that don't yet have tokens. There's nothing we can do about this - eventually the tokenless DVDs will be sold and dealer DVDs will have tokens just like the ones bought direct.

The other thing you should know is that tokens can only be redeemed directly through TGM, not through dealers. We do not allow dealers to buy DVDs with tokens under any circumstances, so they would have no way to use tokens that they redeem for a customer. The detailed terms of this offer can be found below.

Holiday Specials

Effective with the introduction of our token promotion described above, we will be discontinuing all temporary discounts in our cash prices for this and future holiday seasons. In future we may offer DVDs at special discounted token prices for the holidays, but since it is unlikely anyone will have saved up enough tokens by the end of the 2001 holiday season to take advantage of such an offer, our holiday special for the 2001 season is EXTRA TOKENS! For every DVD purchased directly from us between now and 31 January 2002, you will receive one extra token over and above the normal number of tokens awarded for that DVD. So with the freebie included with this newsletter, plus a holiday bonus token, purchasing a copy of our newest DVD, Steel City Traction 3: The North Side before 31 January 2002 gets you halfway to a completely free copy of any of our $19.95 titles!

Non-Holiday Special - Please note that the price of Carvey Davis's Baltimore Streetcar Films has been cut by $5.00. This is a permanent price reduction.

New DVD - Pittsburgh North Side

We proudly (yet sheepishly) announce the newest in our video series on Pittsburgh, Steel City Traction 3: The North Side. Proudly because we think it is one of our best yet, with superbly restored footage of Pittsburgh's most spectacular line, Fineview. Sheepishly because those of you who have seen our ads in Railfan & Railroad know it has been available for several months. Why did we wait so long to tell you, our best and most loyal customers?

The answer is in the story above. It took us some time to put together our new bonus discount token program and have the tokens minted. But we're ready now, so if you order a copy of our newest DVD (or any other DVDs, for that matter) you will be among the first to start accumulating tokens towards your first free DVD.

The two major areas of interest on Pittsburgh's North Side were steep and winding Fineview (Route 21), and the long stretch of private right-of-way on the Westview loop (Routes 10 and 15). Both areas are thoroughly covered in the films of a number of photographers: Charlie Dengler, Art Ellis, Henry Elsner, Russ Jackson, Dick Kehm, Carleton McKinney, Jeff Mora, and Bill Vigrass. There is also fascinating coverage of Routes 1-5 up along the Allegheny, and Route 13 Emsworth down along the Ohio, as well as some of the shorter routes nearer the heart of the North Side. Our usual computer-animated 3D maps are especially useful in understanding the ups and downs and ins and outs of the Fineview line. More details are in our new catalog, or here.

Washington, DC

We are planning to take a break from Pittsburgh, so our next major production will be what we hope to make the definitive DVD on Washington, DC. We have already contacted many of you who have offered us Washington footage in the past, but if any of the rest of you either have (or know about) good Washington, DC footage that you would like us to consider for inclusion in the DVD, please contact us. You can see the arrangements we usually make with photographers who let us use their footage here. This DVD is turning into a major project (we already have hours and hours of footage in hand or on the way, from over a dozen photographers), so don't look for it until well into 2002.

TGM Web Site

If you look at the bottom of the front cover of our new catalog, you'll see the address of our web site, www.transitgloriamundi.com. Sorry it is so many letters - we opted for easier-to-remember over easier-to-type because we figure most people will type it once and bookmark it. It is still very much under construction. The most complete information is for our latest DVDs, and for our flagship TROLLEY. So if you want to see a lot of frame grabs of our newer DVDs (from 50-100 each, way more than we could put in the catalog), maps, and even a brief downloadable movie excerpt from our new Steel City Traction 3: The North Side, you know where to go on the web! Eventually, we'll have lots of images from each DVD, so it will be easy to decide which ones have what you want.

By the way, don't be afraid to check out the site even if you have a slow internet connection or an older browser. We have designed the site to be simple, browser neutral, and to give you a lot of control over what you see, so you won't be sitting for long periods waiting for large pages to download unless you ask for them (and we warn you about page size). There are no frames, nothing requiring a browser plug-in, and no Java or Javascript. Our younger web-savvy friends tell us it's a pretty lame site; we couldn't be more pleased.

Although we have a printer-friendly version of our order form to make mail ordering easier, we don't yet have secure online ordering. If enough of you ask for it, we'll look into it.

TGM Token Promotion
Terms of Offer

Transit Gloria Mundi rewards its repeat customers by distributing tokens with each DVD purchased. These tokens may be collected and redeemed for Transit Gloria Mundi DVDs. DVDs may be purchased for cash or tokens, but not a mixture of the two. The purchase prices of our titles in tokens, as well as the number of tokens awarded with each title, are listed on the reverse. Any TGM title may be purchased with tokens. DVDs may only be purchased with tokens directly from Transit Gloria Mundi; none of our dealers is authorized to accept tokens for the purchase of DVDs. The price in tokens for each DVD includes shipping and handling. DVDs purchased with tokens may only be ordered one DVD at a time. The full number of tokens required to purchase a DVD must be redeemed to purchase that DVD; the tokens that will be awarded with that DVD may not be counted toward its purchase price in tokens. The customer is responsible for the safe shipment of tokens to TGM to purchase a DVD; we do not recommend sending them loose in an envelope, since they may stack up in a corner and burst the envelope. We suggest leaving them attached to the cards on which they come with the DVDs, or that they be attached with DVD to a card or cards. There is no expiration date for this promotion, although TGM reserves the right to withdraw it at any time without prior notice. Under no circumstances will TGM redeem tokens for cash. We reserve the right to change the prices of DVDs in tokens either up or down, permanently or for temporary promotions, as well as the number of tokens awarded with each purchase. Effective immediately, it is our intention to eliminate temporary promotional discounts in the cash prices of our DVDs, such as holiday specials, replacing these promotions with a combination of reduced token prices or extra tokens with purchases for time-limited promotional periods.
